Computer Tips

This article explains all the tips related to computers. If you want to know good tips and shortcuts relating to computers, then this is the place to go.

                                        

Tip Explanation
Using UPS It is always safe to use UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) for our computers especially if there is a possibility of power fluctuations or lightening etc. Also we do not lost any important data that we are working on when the power goes off suddenly as the UPS provides backup power.
Shortcut for closing Application You can close the current application, web page or even shut down the computer using the shortcutAlt + F4.
Restoring Deleted Items in Windows If you accidentally delete any file or folder in Windows, you can restore them by  going to Recycle Bin and selecting the option to "Restore All Items" for restoring all deleted files or select particular file or folder you want to restore and select "Restore this item".
Shift + Del In Windows, if you want to delete a file or folder permanently without going it to Recycle Bin, you can press Shift + Del by selecting that file or folder.
Splitting Hard Drive into Partitions It is always better to split the hard drive into several partitions. This will increase the speed and the disk space will not be wasted.  File management also becomes easy for you.
Too many icons on Desktop Too many icons on the desktop may slow down your computer. So it is better to keep only the icons you really need.
Using Standby and Hibernate modes You may select standby or hibernate mode in your computer if you are leaving for a short break from your computer. These two modes retain your computer in exisitng last state and resumes all the work at exactly the same state later. So, you do not have to wait too long for the computer  system to restore itself.
Ctrl+F f you want to find a particular word or phrase on a web page, word document, notepad or textpad:
Press Ctrl+F; a dialog box opens and type the word or phrase you want to find, it will find that for you. Also you can see the options like FindNext, up or down etc on the dialog box

Creating Shortcut on Desktop in Windows To create shortcuts for files or folders in Windows:
Right click on file/folder->  Send To->Desktop (Create Shortcut).
Set Screensaver If you are using a plasma or CRT computer monitor always set the screen saver. Otherwise when the same image is displayed for longer time, the phospor coating inside the screen may get damaged displaying shadowed images on screen.
Clearing history of documents in Windows If you want to clear the history of documents you have worked in Microsoft Windows:
Right click on Start Menu->Select Properties->Select Start Menu tab
->click on Customize button-> A Customize Classic Start Menu opens
->Click on the clear button.
Using Mouse for typing in Windows If keyboard is not working, we can type using the mouse in Microsoft Windows:
Go to start Menu-> Run-> type osk (this means On-Screen keyboard). Then a keyboard opens, there you can click on the letter you want which will be printed in the document you are working.
Booting into safe mode. For booting the Windows computer into safe mode:
While the computer is starting up, press F8 and select safe mode from the boot options.
Ejecting USB Flash Drive Always the USB flash drive has to be ejected before unplugging to avoid the files and the drive getting corrupted. This applies to both windows and Apple computers.
Setting Screen  Saver in Windows To set the Screen Saver in Windows:
Right click on Desktop->Go to Properties->Select Screen Saver tab. Here you can set the screen saver you want, amount of wait time before screen saver. Also you can see the preview of the screen saver you selected.
To know IP Address of Windows Computer To know the IP Address of your Windows computer: Start->Run->Type cmd, command prompt windows opens->Type ipconfig
Then the IP address along with some other information will be displayed.
Use Disk Cleanup It's good practice to do the 'Disk Cleanup' monthly which deletes the unnecessary files stored in your computer.
Moving Tab space backward. Generally you use Tab for moving a tab space forward. Similarly you can use shift + Tab for moving a Tab space backward.
Searching for Files/Folders in Windows If you want to search for files or folder in a Windows computer:
Go to start->Search->select For or Folders->give the name of the file or folder you want to search. If you are not sure of the exact name, use  *.For example, if you know that the file name starts with ' t ' but don't know the full name you can search by typing as " t* ". This displays all the file names starting with t.
Closing a window/dialog box in Windows computer If you want to close a window or a dialog box in Windows computer, press Alt + Spacebar, then you will get the options to move, minimize or close.
Opening recently accessed documents You can see and open the recently accessed documents by going to Start->Documents in Windows computer.
Windows button + m When you have opened many windows and want to minimize all the windows at once, press "Windows button + m" in Windows computer.
Windows button + D To display the desktop.
Windows button To display start  menu.
Creating New Folder or File To quickly create a new folder or file in Windows, Right click on the mouse-> New->Select and click the file type you want to create.
Ctrl + Esc To display the start menu in Windows computer.
Alt + Esc If you have opened many windows or applications while working, then you can go to the window you want by using alt + Esc.
Setting Background If you want to change the background in Windows computer:
Right click on the Desktop->Select Properties->Select Desktop tab->Select the background you want and click OK.
