Different Ways of Internet Access

Connecting to the internet can cost from a few dollars (by installing a modem in our computer) to thousands of dollars (by using optical fiber cable with its special hardware).

We can get internet access through the dial-up, broadband, Wi-Fi, satellite and 3G technology cell phones. These days many of us are using broadband connection rather than dial-up connection because of increased speed with broadband.

Using LAN:

We can connect our computer to the Internet via LAN which is having the Internet access. There is no need of modem when we are accessing the Internet via LAN.

Example:

LAN users can access the internet through college or office systems.

Dial-up using Telephone Line:

We need a modem if we are not connecting to the Internet via LAN. Modem connects our computers to other computers and interprets the data being transmitted in both directions.

It converts the digital signals from our computer into analog signals which can be transmitted over a standard telephone line. This process is called modulation.

There will be a modem on the other end too which converts back these analog signals to the digital signals. This reverse process is called demodulation. We are not automatically connected to the computer whenever we turn on our computer but we have to explicitly dialup for the connection.
