Regular maintenance of our computer makes it run smoothly. Disk cleanup is also one of the maintenance tool in Microsoft Windows. Disk Cleanup frees up the space on the hard disk by searching for the files that we can delete safely.
After searching it comes up with the files which can be deleted, then we can select the files to be deleted among them.
The Disk Cleanup will delete unnecessary files like temporary internet files, offline files, installed programs which we don’t use, compression of old files, downloaded program files like java applets downloaded from internet, windows temporary files, optional windows components we are not using and empties the recycle bin.

If there any temporary files that the computer is using while running disk cleanup, then those files are locked and are not deleted.
In our computer, we can check disk cleanup at:
In Windows XP, Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup (or)
My Computer -> Right click on the drive we want (C drive or D drive) ->Properties -> General->Disk Cleanup (or)
Start->Run->type cleanmgr->click OK.
After using disk cleanup, the hard disk is left with lot of empty spaces in the places where the files were deleted. So, running defrag is a better choice here in order to reorganize the hard disk. Using Disk cleanup regularly frees up large amount of hard disk space which in turn greatly improves the performance of our computer.
