Backup is the process of making copies of important data. Hence, we can have the extra copies to restore the original data in case of accidental loss of data.
Sometimes we may accidentally or unintentionally lose important information like projects, homework, financial information etc stored in our computer because of hardware/software failures.
So, it is better practice to make backup copies of our important information regularly.

Backup in our computer:
In Windows XP, Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore.
In Windows Vista, Start->Control Panel->System and Maintenance->Back up your computer.
Manually making Backup copies:
We can also do backup by storing another copy of our
important files in external hard disk, DVD, CD or in a flash memory.
One of the simplest techniques of the backup is copy and paste.
The files and folders which we can to backup are just copied using “Ctrl + C” and then pasted using “Ctrl +v” command in the external hard drive or flash drive.
We can get some backup software which are able to do a full backup of files or databases and also recover those data in case of data loss.
These kinds of software make an exact duplicate of everything contained on the original source. Some types of backup software use drive image technology for backing up the entire drive while some use file by file methods for backup.

Examples:
IRestorer which is a drive Image Backup with Disaster Recovery, Cobian Backup.
We many experience some decrease in performance while the computer is being backed up. This is because the hard disk drive will be busy with file reading for backups so some amount of bandwidth will be consumed by this process.
It is better practice to do the backups regularly because a hard drive can function ideally for not more than 2 years. We may lose all our important information if the hard drive goes down unexpectedly.
