Motherboards

A motherboard is a printed circuit board that contains the CPU, memory, expansion slots for peripherals and responsible for connecting every part of the computer linking all the hardware together.

It allows the components that process the data to communicate with one another.

Components:

Generally the motherboard contains the following components:

Processor, Memory,

RTC (Real time Clock): Synchronizes bus operations and other components

CMOS RAM: Used to store information about computer configuration RTC updated date and time

ROM BIOS (Basic Input Output System): A set of low level routines in ROM to provide initial instructions for Power on Self Test (POST) and booting system files

RAM sockets, Bus slots, CPU slots, Cache RAM slot

Jumpers: Generally provide users to set various clock rates to work with CPU

Internal connectors and external connectors

Interrupts, Keyboard controller.

Besides these, some motherboards like 386 contain extra slot for math coprocessor.

The performance, multimedia graphics, sound capabilities of the computer are maintained by the motherboard. If we want to increase the performance of our computer, it can be achieved through the motherboard either by adding the RAM or replacing the CPU chip on the motherboard.

All components of the system we buy must be compatible with the motherboard. If our motherboard does not support the upgrading of any component we want, then there is no choice other than to replace with a new motherboard.

Before buying a motherboard for our computer we have to make sure that it is compatible with the CPU of our computer.
